Welcome to Cleeve Fish Bar, a quintessential fish and chips takeaway nestled in the heart of Bishops Cleeve, Cheltenham. Known for its generous portions and a no-frills approach to the British classic, this beloved local gem is a must-try for anyone craving comfort food done right.
The allure of Cleeve Fish Bar starts with its menu, which showcases not just the iconic fish and chips, but also a range of other tantalizing offerings. The cod is a standout, large and beautifully cooked, often beautifully crispy on the outside while soft and flaky within—a true testament to their commitment to quality. Pair it with their rich and flavorful curry sauce, praised for its delightful kick, and you have a meal that is both satisfying and memorable.
Alongside the classics, adventure-seekers might indulge in the ‘battered burger’, as touted by one enthusiastic customer, Stevie Brown. It’s a delightful northern specialty that promises to take your taste buds on a joyride. The takeaway also caters to meat lovers with perfectly grilled chicken burgers and the much-debated donner kebabs, which, despite a few minor quirks like the unexpected dry cabbage, are generally well-received. The compliments towards the food are bolstered by comments on the quick service and large portion sizes—something many patrons, including Mike Litchfield and Harrison Creed, have gladly pointed out.
However, while it’s clear that Cleeve Fish Bar excels in delivering hearty meals, some reviews highlight the need for a little extra sparkle in their customer service. Despite this, many, like Laura Newman, affirm that the incredible value and quality of the food far outweigh any minor service hiccups. The takeaway often bursts at the seams—indicative of its popularity—especially on a chilly night, when locals flock for piping hot portions of chips, cod, and their signature curry sauce.
In summary, Cleeve Fish Bar isn’t just a place to grab a meal; it’s a celebration of comfort food that resonates with both locals and visitors. Whether you’re stopping by after a long day or indulging in a weekend treat, you're guaranteed a meal that warms the heart and satisfies the hunger. So, why wait? Dive into the deliciousness that awaits you at Cleeve Fish Bar—you won’t regret it!

Great fish n chips. A long wait. An even longer wait for a donner kebab. Not sure why you put red dry prickly cabbage on what was otherwise a good kebab. Excellent curry sauce too.

Absolutely love this place! The amount of food you get for the price is great but more importantly the quality is second to none. I don’t visit here that regularly but I wouldn’t go to any other fish and chip shop within a 2 mile radius. The staff could be more friendly but maybe it had been a long day. Would recommend and will continue to order from here.

“The fish was large and beautifully cooked, and the curry sauce had a lovely kick—rich and flavorful. But the chip portion was surprisingly small for a ‘large’ order, which was disappointing. Still, the overall quality of the food was excellent. Hoping for more chips next time!”

Portion control is not the name of the game here, and THANK GOODNESS for that! The cod and chips are always tasty, and as I say, a large portion of chips often feeds three. Could possibly be five stars if the service was a little better, a little cheerier perhaps. But the great tasting nosh can make up for the 'awkwardness' in the shop.
